Life on campus is good for many college students. It is the beginning of February and most students by now have received their student loan money for the spring semester. The student loan money will pay for their tuition and books. If students did the right thing, they estimated correctly so that they will have enough student loan money to help pay for their dorm and/or rent, food and daily living expenses as well. Many students tend to forget to anticipate what their total costs will be for a semester. Students often neglect to include cost of meals, costs for day-to-day living and even their books!
Don’t Take Student Loan Money for Granted
It is easy for students to go through a semester without a budget. Some students live day to day and week to week trusting that they have enough funds from their student loans to get through the semester and then some.
Instead of creating a budget that displays total expenses for the semester, which can be broken down into days or weeks, there are students who take their student loans for granted.
Shopping Can Equal Trouble
It is easy to get caught up in buying sprees. Student loan checks come in and some see the money as a way to buy things they want but don’t necessarily need. How about that iPod you wanted? One of the more inexpensive iPods downloads more than 7,000 songs and the cost is about $300. That doesn’t seem like too much money.
Then there are cool knickknacks for your dorm or apartment, many of which you really don’t need. Single items don’t seem to cost too much: $20 here, $45 there, and so on. It all adds up and before you know it you’ve spent another $300 or $400.
Some students get into the clothing shopping sprees. Those $125 jeans are cute, but they won’t help you pass your Astronomy class. The same goes for the $110 sneakers. You might walk a bit faster to class but it doesn’t mean you’ll make the grade you need.
